Potato seed, ready for planting

When you know little about farming (like me), it’s hard to appreciate how much time and energy goes into preparing the fields for planting.  Our fields were covered in grass and weeds which meant that it all had to be turned over and tilled a whole bunch of times before we could get started.  Then, the fields had to dry out sufficiently to set up the beds.

But now the time has come.  Today we planted our very first crop: potatoes!  Lots and lots of potatoes.  How much, you ask?  20 rows.  18 varieties.  A potential yield of several thousand pounds.  Time to do some research on creative ways to cook potatoes.  I sure hope our CSA members like taters.

  1. Your blog continues to be one of my favorite things! And potatoes were just about my favorite veggie garden crop. Did you plant any blues?
